Messrs. Price's Patent Candle Co.Ltd.,
Battersea,
London, S.W.11.

For the attention of Mr. Brooker.

Dear Sirs,

We have run into a trouble on our Phantom III cars in the hands of customers which directly affects the use of Price's oils in these cars.

Our experimental road running has been confined almost entirely to Castrol 'XL'.

We have a very fine filter which deals with the oil supplied to the hydraulic valve adjusting mechanism of the cylinder head. On Wakefield's oil we have not found it necessary to clean this filter at intervals of less than 10,000 miles, in spite of the fact that we have run at high oil temperatures under Continental conditions. With Price's Motorine 'C' in customers' hands, however, the filter has become covered with sludge after a relatively short mileage; in one instance 1,500 only, and in consequence the oil supply to the valve gear has been cut off.

We have no doubt that you may know of some means of overcoming this sludge trouble: it may also be possible for us to adjust our filters so that they are less critical to this factor. For the time being, however, we have no alternative but to ask our Phantom III customers to run on Castrol 'XL' until a solution of the problem has been found. This of course does not affect our recommendations on the 20/25 HP. and Bentley.
