I/U/102. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd., Derby. Dear Sirs, WHEATLAND WORKS, SEACOMBE, CHESHIRE, ENG. 21st August, 1937. File For the Attention of Mr. A.F. Martindale. Your Ref. RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM{Anthony F. Martindale}/7AP. We thank you for your letter of the 17th inst., referring to the tests on our Brake Lining. We are proceeding with the manufacture of the Set of "400" M special, which we are supplying free of charge, to be tested on a car should the opportunity occur. In regard to the ordinary Safeguard "400" M which we are going to impregnate with graphite, we will give this the reference of "400" G.M., the letters signifying Graphited Metallic. It is possible that the effect of the graphite might be to lower the static co-efficient of friction and the kinetic co-efficient of friction at very slow rubbing speeds, which would, no doubt, help considerably in overcoming the squeak trouble. It will be necessary to do some experimental work before submitting the graphited Liners, to make sure there is some advantage in this proceedure. Before making up a set of Liners, it occurs to us that it is advisable for us to submit small segments for your test rig, so as to enable you to approve the material before making up the car test. If you will let us know the dimensions of your pieces, and | ||
