CROSS & SIDE STEERING TUBES. I.O.P. G.77462. I.O.P. F.79861.

The friction loads of the cross and side steering tubes remained consistent, the loads being - side steering tube 3 lbs., cross steering tube 10 lbs., at 5,000 miles, 10,000 miles and 15,000 miles. There was no trouble with the lubrication of the ball joints. The side steering tube springs were adjusted up to the standard for the Bentley.

GEARBOX. I.O.P. G.81283. SYNCHROMESH 2nd SPEED.

The following new modifications fitted in accordance with HA/Cry.3/KW.5.7.34 :-

EX.15242 Operating Cam - 50º
EX.15243 Mod. to G.81164 Outer Member, i.e., slot altered from 48º to 50º.

The changing of the gears was, at the start, very lumpy and heavy to engage. By continual use and changing, the heaviness decreased, and at the finish of the test was normal. The second gear could be engaged from rest without undue force and generally upon the first attempt. The changing down from third to second is still difficult to engage - there is the lumpy feeling of the cone sticking. An easy change can always be obtained if double clutching is resorted to. Changing up from first to second presents no difficulty. There has been no failure of any mechanical units. The continuous gears were very bad for noise at the start, and did not improve until 5,000 miles had been run, after which they quickly became quiet and have remained so. The oil in the gearbox was a mixture of Whitmore's and Price's engine oil, no change having been made since the car left the Works. Oil loss was negligible. The rubber mounting at the rear of the box gave no trouble and did not deteriorate. The rubber cushions for the torque were set up two complete turns of compression, this being found to give the best results.
