Bailey - Chief Engineer} GEARBOX WITH EPICYCLIC THIRD SPEED. The distressing noise we have had from the Maybach jaws on this gearbox we now believe is due to too steep an angle on the jaws which has caused the dogs to be banged in to the opposite gear which would then of course be already for a crash engagement. The angle on the present jaws is 6°, those we have been running on 14-EX. are 5°, we believe we can work quite well with 4°. Immediately after Easter the gearbox will be dismantled to alter the angle of the jaws and to try and improve the silence of the gears. If we get the angle of the jaws correct we then agree with your wire that the only difficulty would be engaging the third speed which should be overcome with a brake on the sunwheel.
