To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG2. 7. 23. X2565 X3923 With reference to your telegram asking for a 40/50 HP. car of first-class appearance for photographing purposes on compative hill tests. We replied by wire today stating that we had no car suitable. We have 6-EX Car here. At present, however, the gear box and axle are dismantled. We have tried several sets of ground straight side shaft gears on this car but so far we have not been able to obtain the necessary silence. We have not been able to reproduce the results which we can get on the 20 HP. car or on the old type 3-speed 40/50 box. Our tests go to show that the probable reason for the 40/50 being difficult is the oil which is trapped in the gears. We could let you have 6-EX car at a week or 10 days notice.
