Sidgreaves - MD}18/E.27.10.30, We think that the real facts that "R" had in mind when he said that he was disappointed with the square tubes, were that they shewed insufficient improvement over the dented round tubes to warrant the additional expense. Actually however, we do not see any reason why the square tube should not gain as much from indentation as the round tube and this is what we are at present testing. When we have obtained our results it will be entirely a question of balancing expense against efficiency. It would appear that we may be able to obtain a square tube that is only slightly more expensive than the round tube with a gain of 6º - 8º centigrade. With reference to Bonnet ventilation. We shewed the horizontal louvred bonnet to "R" on Tuesday and he admitted that in view of the amount of rivetting entailed, it was disappointing. He said that he would definitely design a bonnet shutter on the lines of the one Pn.{Mr Northey} saw at the Paris Show. In view of these facts, we think we should wait for R's. design, though experimentally we have made up one or two sets of different sorts which we thought might be suitable to influence "R" in the right direction.
