To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to CJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} X9490 S E C R E T. E1/M27.3.24. E.A.C. WW. REPORT. X.9940 X.9230 X.9490 As many as possible are working on the brake systems to be finished this week. There is however not work for all, and Mr. Jenner is continuing with the alterations to the exhaust pipes and silencers. As regards EAC.11. extra silencer capacity is required as you have said. This cannot be obtained so far as we can see by increasing the length or dia. of the existing silencer as there is no room to expend without fouling something or decreasing the ground clearance. We therefore shew an expansion chamber opposite the gearbox on the attached blue print LeC.1856 as one way of obtaining more capacity on EAC.11. The dia. of this chamber cannot conveniently be more than 5". This drawing also shews an exhaust manifold on the engine 50% larger in cross sectional area at the delivery with the exhaust pipe connecting to the silencers correspondingly increased in size. An alternative scheme is being drawn in which there are two exhaust manifolds connected together at the front end of the engine to give an ejector effect. We should like to know from Mr. Hives if EAC.3. requires an alteration as regards the size of the exhaust manifold. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
