The failure of an end cap on a Marles Steering box due to a deeply drilled oil union hole.

Marles Steering.

Attached sketch shows where the end cap failed on one of the Marles boxes.

It appears that the screw threaded hole for the oil union B is drilled too far down the end cap and weakening portion A where the extension pipe starts.

I have not seen the box myself, but I believe there was quite a considerable amount of slack in the box.

If there has been any slack in the cross shaft in the box, this would tend to put a shearing force on the portion A.{Mr Adams}

* The box should be in R.R. Exptl. Dept., Derby, by now for investigation.
