The tractive effort curves - which are expressed in terms of tractive effort per ton weight of car - should give an index to the car's performance on gradients, although this is not strictly accurate because the factor of wind resistance is neglected. With regard to the latter factor it would appear that the Lancia should possess an advantage by virtue of its low build, presenting less head area.

"Referring to these curves, and comparing on this basis, it is seen that at the lower speed the 20 HP. is considerably superior to the Lancia, a statement borne out by road performance. At the same time it must be remembered that the 20 HP. has a larger engine - 3.3 litres against 2.12 litres and the Lancia carries a heavier load for the capacity of its engine than the 20 HP. The ratio car weight - including three passengers - to the swept volume for the 20 HP. is .53 and for the Lancia .70 which shews that the Lancia is relatively 32% heavier loaded.

The nett result is that the 20 HP. RR. actually has a better aggregate performance with regard to power than the Lancia by virtue of its larger engine. The Lancia however maintains a very good M.E.P. over a wide speed range.

We are taking further particulars of the Lancia with regard to its value areas, lift and timing.
