Instructions for using “ALUNIZE” Solder

No Flux Required

(1) ALUMINIUM SHOULD BE FREE FROM DIRT, GREASE, OR FOREIGN MATTER. DIRTY CASTINGS SHOULD BE CLEANED WITH FILE OR SCRAPER.

(2) Apply heat to aluminium with blow pipe or blow lamp until sufficiently heated to melt the “ALUNIZE,” when rubbed firmly on the surface to be soldered. The flame must be deflected while you TEST THE TEMPERATURE.

(3) When the “ALUNIZE” begins to melt, run off enough to tin the surface to be soldered. Keep the “ALUNIZE” in the liquid state and rub thoroughly into the aluminium, using the cutting edge of a half round scraper or similar tool suitable for the job. A wire brush would be suitable for irregular surfaces.

(4) It will be noticed when rubbing the “ALUNIZE” into the aluminium that the two metals instantly unite. MAKE SURE THAT THE WHOLE SURFACE HAS BEEN THOROUGHLY TINNED. Scrape off the “ALUNIZE” which has been used for the tinning purpose and add “ALUNIZE” to complete the job.

(5) When soldering two pieces together, carry out above instructions, and make sure that BOTH surfaces have been TINNED. Heat to required temperature and add more “ALUNIZE.” When this runs freely clamp together and wipe scraper round the joint. CARE MUST BE TAKEN NOT TO MOVE THE JOINT UNTIL COLD.

(6) Cracks.—Drill a small hole at either end to prevent crack running and chip groove along.
Broken lugs, Bosses, etc.—File flat the broken part to give the maximum amount of surface. THOROUGHLY TIN SURFACE AND EDGES and build up with “ALUNIZE” to the required shape.

(7) When building up large broken bosses, lugs, etc., it is advisable to first file flat the broken part and tin the surface and edges. Then make a mould with asbestos or fire-clay to the required shape, and fasten to casting. Heat the aluminium to CORRECT TEMPERATURE and build up with “ALUNIZE.”

(8) When joining tubes to sockets, use a round wire brush for tinning the sockets, and a flat fan-tail wire brush for tinning the tubes.

(9) Clearance should be .005.
