Re. SAMPLE HUB CAP. SUBMITTED FOR CHROMIUM PLATING TEST.

The above cap was, we understand, plated to our recommendations, which included 0.0025" thickness of nickel deposit.

Examination of this cap showed the following :-

Chromium - Not measured.
Nickel - 0.0065"
Copper - 0.0065"
Nickel - A very thin "flash" on the unpolished position only.

The adhesion of the deposit to base material had satisfactorily withstood the chromium plating operation without any blistering. Examination of the cross-sectional saw cut, produced during operation of the specimen for examination of deposit thickness, however, showed that the deposit could be easily lifted with a knife, and pulled off the steel.

Porosity test showed break-down on the edges of the engraved S.S, but this appeared to be due to small burrs not removed from the steel before plating. It is very doubtful whether this would ever be a really satisfactory job, on account of the engraving. On the plain portions of the surface the freedom from porosity was good.
