RE 20 H.P. BRAKE GEAR. X.3568

Referring again to the work on the 20 H.P. back axle, there is yet the scheme of the brake shaft operating gear to be got out. This cannot be very well done until the position of the brake countershaft has been fixed up in the frame.

Mr. Royce says he would be glad if you would get a scheme in hand for the brake gear in the frame, also for the brake shaft gear on the axle.

Owing to the relatively high position to which the axle rises, it appears necessary to have the differential mechanism forward of the gear box, and to fix on the cross member opposite to the front ends of the rear springs two brake counter-shafts carrying two pairs of levers connected by cables to the back axle, and with the torque tube rising and falling in between them.

This seems somewhat more complicated than the 40/50 H.P. chassis in which the differential mechanism is carried on the brake cross shafts, but the adoption of this latter scheme would mean having the cross shafts above the top of the frame, which would be very objectionable.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
