U.W. N3989 BY/EL. [struck through] c. Rg.{Mr Rowledge} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BY14/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 25.8.24. "EAGLE" IX ENGINES. RE USE OF STEEL FOR LOWER SECTION INDUCTION PIPE. ------------------------------------------ Referring to the proposal to make the lowest section of the Induction Pipes in steel, whilst carrying out the suggested experiment at the Works by which two of these will be tested on a bench test where the difference between the brass jacket and the steel pipe would be sufficient experiment to settle the issue whether the brass jacket was likely to give any trouble or not due to its different rate of expansion, I also think that we should produce a further pair of these with the object of handing same over to the K.L.M. to let them run them on one of their services, as they certainly cannot be any worse and one would imagine they would be considerably better from the point of view of endurance than the copper pipes. Some definite running experience with these pipes would then enable us to definitely recommend, so far as we are concerned, the use of these steel pipes for the Batavia Flight.
