Top Section: More power with lower running costs A revolution in Silencer design The BURGESS Straight-through SILENCER DISADVANTAGES OF PRESENT DAY SILENCERS It has long been realized that this form of Silencer has many serious disadvantages. By creating undesirable back pressure, it reduces engine power, limits acceleration and prevents the rapid release of hot gases. As a result, therefore, for racing cars where engine noise can be ignored a straight-through exhaust pipe is invariably preferred. DURING the past few years vast sums have been expended by the motor industry to develop faster, more efficient and still more economical cars. But hitherto little has been done to improve the Silencer. The problem of noise elimination has for many years attracted the attention of Dr. Burgess, founder of Burgess Laboratories Incorporated, and a scientist of international repute. During extended research on acoustics it was discovered that when sound waves strike a metal plate perforated with small holes and packed with sound absorbing material, THE METALLIC SURFACE DOES NOT REFLECT THE NOISE, in fact the effectiveness of the sound-absorbing material is greater when faced with perforated metal than without it. THE NEW BURGESS PRINCIPLE This revolutionary principle in acoustics has been applied with the utmost success to the silencing of automobile exhaust noises—without creating back pressure. Hitherto, engineers have tried to muffle the explosions by restriction. The Burgess Straight-Through Silencer reduces the intensity of the sound waves by absorption. In other words, the pulsations set up by the explosions are absorbed by the special acoustic filling faced with perforated metal, the whole forming a tubular outer casing which surrounds but DOES NOT RESTRICT the out-flowing exhaust gases. Sound vibrations are thus effectively damped out whilst the exhaust system remains as free as if a corresponding length of plain tube or open cut-out were employed. SILENCE—WITHOUT BACK PRESSURE Now consider carefully what this means. Nothing whatever to impede the free passage of the exhaust gases from the engine to the atmosphere—no baffles—no restrictions—and consequently NO BACK PRESSURE. This amazing result is combined with really efficient silencing. It sounds almost too good to be true, yet more than twenty leading British and American car manufacturers after searching tests have standardized the Burgess Straight-Through Silencer on their latest models. On the next page you will read how this simple invention will enable you to enjoy greater power—snappier acceleration and lower running costs. Bottom Section: 20 Car Manufacturers now use the new Burgess Straight-through Silencer FIRST developed in America, the Burgess Straight-through Silencer has been adopted as standard fitting on the following American Cars: Chrysler, De Vaux, De Soto, Hudson, Stutz, Packard, Lincoln, Duesenberg, Plymouth, Dodge, Hupmobile, Pierce-Arrow, Essex, Studebaker. Although only manufactured in Great Britain for a very short period, the Burgess Straight-through Silencer has already been standardised on no less than twelve well-known British cars, the names of which are invariably associated with the highest standard of performance—and silence. To obviate delivery of a possibly ill-suited type of silencer ask your usual service garage to fill in a special Burgess Order Form, embodying our seven days' free trial offer. This will be given to all the necessary particulars, and delivery will be made to your service agent usually within a few days of receiving the official order. Direct orders from private owners cannot be accepted unless there are special difficulties in obtaining local service. In any case of difficulty, we are always glad to redirect the nearest Burgess agent. BURGESS PRODUCTS COMPANY, Dept. S1, Bush House, London, W.C.2.
