With reference to your memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry{Shadwell Grylls}6/R.11.9.37, re broken cage in pinion bearing. It is a standard routine job to measure the nip on the pinion bearings and the one I sent up had the required amount of nip. I was under the impression that you would be aware of this otherwise I should have stated so. All we know is, the axle came in for noise and upon dismantling, the cage was found broken.

There was no evidence to show the cause.
We have got an old type ball race in with a broken cage, and the actual nip on this race was .006. There is another axle in with an over run from 40 to 20 M.P.H. which will be dismantled shortly; the particulars of which I will send if anything new is found.

Re: Driving Dogs.

It would be very interesting if you could find out the condition the driving dogs are being fitted.

We are getting numerous complaints of rattles and the splines of the driving dogs do not show any wear. In our opinion they are not being fitted right in the first place, either the hub is on the large size or the dogs are tight in the corners of the splines. We say this because in the majority of replacements after a short mileage a .003" oversize driving dog is just right.
