X.4383. 20 HP. CHASSIS DYNAMO No.365. EX CHASSIS 51-S-4. C.J. CAULFIELD.

With reference to your note BY1/ML15.1.25, we have now completed the running and examination generally of this machine, and attached please find copy of my assistant's report AC.37.

Summarizing the contents of this report, it appears that excessive wear has been due

(1) To the sides of the commutator segments not being perfectly clear of mica.

(2) To the incorrect main brush position (as compared with present production). It will be appreciated that this is quite an early machine. We think the machine will be cured of the trouble by:-

(a) Machine undercutting.

(b) Correcting the main brush position in the manner described, viz. by shifting the commutator connections round one commutator segment in the direction opposite to rotation, i.e. at present the commutator is too much advanced.

(c) Putting the machine through the production test for the re-setting of the control brush to suit the new main brush position.

We return the machine herewith.
