P.2 GEARBOX WITH EPICYCLIC THIRD.

When the gearbox was dismantled after the last run, we reported rapid wear on the band brake which was attributed to using Cotton Duck brake material, we found that the Cotton Duck brake lining had worn considerably.

The gearbox has since been built up lined with Ferodo, the material is supposed to be the same as used on the Wilson gearbox. The car has been tested on the road again, and after a number of changes the brake slipped badly and overheated.

Examination shows that the Ferodo material has worn and spread badly. The operation of this gear works so easily that it is liable to get a considerable amount of abuse. In this respect it differs from the Wilson type box, in as much as the change can be made without touching the clutch pedal or the accelerator pedal.

The next time the gearbox is erected, it is our intention to only do the change gear when the throttle is shut and to see whether, when reasonable care is taken, the brake will last.
