TYRES ON EXISTING CARS. R2/M 15/4/27. X4565 X4050

The question of fitting low pressure tyres on to cars running with high pressure tyres has lately been discussed.

Although there are low pressure tyres made to fit the existing rim, it is thought that it is better and more economical to change the wheels and rims. If larger tyres are fitted to existing wheels we get into trouble with body clearances, steering lock, wheel carriers and gear ratios.

The cost to us of 6 new wheels for the 40/50 HP. is approximately £21, on the 20 HP. five wheels cost approx. £15. 10. 0. The tyres to fit these rims cost less than those to fit on the existing rims so that the cost of wheels is soon repaid.

On cars either 40/50 HP. or 20 HP. with front brakes it is necessary to fit hydraulic dampers if low pressure tyres are fitted. This is not necessary on pre-front wheel brake cars. The steering will naturally be made heavier on the old high geared steerings with low pressure tyres but the front tyre pressures can be adjusted to suit this. Full advantage can be taken on the rear tyres with low pressures.
