FILES. X.1113 29th July, 1936. re GUL-59 Chassis. - Overoiling Complaints. When we arrived at Cricklewood we found the engine of the above chassis partly stripped and looking at the cylinder head all cylinders had a considerable amount of soft carbon deposit, the four middle cylinders being particularly bad. We also noticed that all the inlet ports had quite a considerable amount of oil in them and we at once suspected grummets since we could find very little trace of oil in the air intake bend. After your 'phone call to Br.{T. E. Bellringer - Repair Manager} the engine was rebuilt and we have now finished a consumption run on both chassis. Our own chassis G.A.E.-20 finished with an oil consumption of 400 m.p.g. at a 38 m.p.h. average which is considerably lower figure than on your recent run to Leyland. G.U.L. 59 chassis finished with a consumption of 228 m.p.g. After completing the consumption test we allowed both cars to idle for 10 minutes and then opened the throttles. Both exhausts were free from overoiling, which at the moment rather points to the fact that grummets are not the cause of the trouble. When warming up prior to the consumption test G.U.L.59 had certainly a very dirty exhaust but this of course may have been due to high oil pressure with cold oil. At the moment we are having the pistons and cylinder blocks changed over but we do not propose changing the heads, since the head on G.A.E.20 has valves made to EX. drawing, and we do not know whether these are anything like standard. We shall of course examine the cylinder heads again and also check over whether the Grummets are fitting correctly and have not too much clearance; in case the clearance is excessive we shall change over grummets. | ||
