To Wor. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} for HY. {Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} from M.Olley. 15315 19/MO1/IB13315. COPY OC [Struck through] March 13th.1915. For driving the dynamo on seaplanes, we are thinking of adopting a drive somewhat as shown in the sketch i.e. like the fan drive on our cars. We intend to use a 5/8" Whittle belt, and we must use fairly big belt pulleys, but we do not know what belt speed is allowable. With the engine running at 1600 revolutions, we shall drive the generator at 3200 revolutions. The length of the drive is doubtful, but might be about 24" between centres. The large belt pulley on the crankshaft works out conveniently at about 8" diameter measured to the middle of the belt. This would mean, of course, a 4" pulley on the generator. Would you please inform us whether such a drive gives satisfactory results, and what pulley diameters really give the best results. The power transmitted is 2 1/2 HP. Would you please make a few experiments with larger and smaller diameters so as to ascertain what is the best diameter to adopt, and give an opinion as to the size and type of belt. An electro motor driving a fan such as the one behind the radiator might be tried. The drive is vertical with the small driven pulley at the top. M. {Mr Moon / Mr Moore} Olley.
