To SFC. From E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to GR.{George Ratcliffe} AH. RW. EPC. E1/G31/3/21. X.3199 X.294 X.430 RE VISIT OF MR. CLARK TO WEST WITTERINGHenry Royce's home town. 28TH FEBRUARY, 1921. We send you herewith list of points which Mr. Royce indicated during your visit, he would like to receive attention. (1) Do we get pre-ignition due to mutual induction, and the Delco not ? (2) Can the Delco use tungsten points, and we not ? (3) Why do the American ignitions use heavy current and R.H. only moderate current ? Is this due to 6 volts as against 12 volt ? (4) Why will not a jump spark distributor do with carbon points. (5) Continue investigation of jump spark distributor with tungsten. (6) See if brass points will stand in a jump spark distributor if well ventilated. (7) Why cannot a carbon distributor be used for a battery ignition as satisfactorily as on a magneto. (8) Insulation - Great interest should be taken in insulation as it is absolutely essential to the work of the Electrical Dept. as regards economy in production. Procure sheets and bushes of bakelite. (9) Dynamos. (a) Mr. Royce does not favour the four-brush scheme (but the...) (b) Mr. Royce does not favour the Lucas third brush scheme with extra winding and extra wires and switches. (c) The Rotax machine is priced at £13.10.0 less 20%. How does this compare with the Lucas ? (d) Are the Rotax machines AT.12 and AT.4 well made ? Mr. Clark should visit the Rotax Company and see what are the reasons for their machine heating up and losing output. (e) Can we afford to use the Bleriot cutout ? What is the difference in cost ? Is it very rarely that the differences in cost are sent to Mr. Royce for his consideration. (f) We have gone off Smiths because they cannot quieten their machines or give us a regular and sufficient supply of machines. We might consider what the Rotax Company could do for us. (Contd.) | ||
