328 GRX Copy to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} HRS. E/HDY.{William Hardy}1/M.29.5.37. PHANTOM III. GEARBOX. We send herewith N.Sch.5151 showing the application of the Buick type synchromesh to the 2nd speed of a standard Ph.III. box for experimental purposes. The application of this type of synchromesh to the top and 3rd speeds has already been instructed by N.Sch.5146, and the principal new feature which it is now desired to test is the use of the Buick type coupling for the 2nd speed. To commence with the teeth of the coupling are not to be relieved on either side. If our previous experience with 2nd speed couplings is anything to go by, the relief that will be necessary will have to be made on the drive side. Should this be so, the next point to determine is how many teeth can be left unrelieved. When this is known we can perhaps form an idea whether those that remain are strong enough. Att:N.Sch.5151.
