-3- Contd. Vulcanized fibre Hygroscopic cracks in flame. Hard, pliable, machineable. Cellons From acetylene-celluloses. Non-inflammable. Cellon varnishes. Good for iron etc. Unaffected by oils, fats, petrolium, benzine, etc. Dry quickly. Cellon materials can reach 30,000 volts/mm. Disintegrates in flame. Bakelite Artificial resin made from tar. Various stages in manufacture. Final is good insulator and strong. Stand 300°C then carbonizes slowly. Eswelite Sp.{Mr Spinney} gr.{George Ratcliffe} 1.2 stand immersion in water and some immersion in dilute H₂ SO4. 15000 volts/mm. Glass. Solid solution. Components mutually dissolved. 20,000 volts/mm. Liable to crack. Cannot be machined. Attacked by water by production of free alkali which reacts with silicon dioxide. Porcelain. Aluminium silicates. Fire-proof. Dielectric strength high. Non-hygroscopic. Conducts away heat. Stand compression. Should fracture smoothly. No cavities. Should ring clearly when hot. Asbestos. Absorbent, swells. Mixed with materials that soak in and form hard and homogenous substances (as pitch resin, sulphur). Eshallit Abroin, tenazit, agalit, fizonit (trade names). Good strength and electrical properties. Oils. should be free from acids, and water. Minimum volatility. Non-depositing. Very small water content Contd. | ||
