x112. BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} CONFIRMATION OF 'PHONE MESSAGE. R1/M16.9.32. C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} x5300 re. J.3. & PEREGRINE. CLUTCH. WE ARE SENDING DESIGNS OF MUCH BETTER AND SIMPLER CLUTCH, BUT IT WILL REQUIRE EXTENSIVE ALTERATIONS TO PATTERNS AND TOOLS - ADVISE WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} LATER. The following modifications were found necessary to these clutches, the design of which had followed closely the original 20HP. of many years ago. We had made alterations called for by the rubber driving coupling, and recent tests and increased HPs.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} called for increased surface and spring pressure. So we have completely redesigned the scheme to save cost in workmanship, and allow of cast iron friction surfaces which have proved so wonderfully superior for brakes. We have deleted some of the costly workmanship, increased the average allowed for free expansion of both plates, arranged the springs clear of heat and made them air cooled, altered the thick ness for cast iron body if found less expensive cast iron now being stronger and of more uniform density by centrifugal castings makes this possible for even 5000 RPM. in a small flywheel of good section.
