-2- contd. engagement when the engine fired, appeared to be slightly prolonged, the result being a more prolonged gear scream on dis-engagement. As stated, we are of the opinion that we have slightly overshot the mark, though against this it should be said, that in later trials of the same system on the same chassis, the effect did not appear to be so marked. One such system has been approved by Mr. Platford as passing quite satisfactorily, in the first instance, for production. We did not similarly observe results on the 3rd chassis, namely 18-EX, to be fitted with a similar system, and which has now, we understand, been sent to you. We hope, however, you will find this system similarly satisfactory. We have however, arranged for a spring of intermediate rate (called Y), which will be subject to trial. We believe that this intermediate spring will give the best result. Generally speaking we do appear to have arrived at a mainly satisfactory arrangement. We have very carefully gone into the matter of the exact adjustment and gap limits of the automatic switch, and given production instructions accordingly. It is not impossible, that owing to the heavy duty of this switch, the operation of the main copper contacts may not be contd. | ||
