Report on chassis 9 G.III. -
Open Touring car - after 7,000
miles test in France.

ENGINE.

Power.
Still good. Compressions Nos. 1, 3, 5 & 6 cylinders are good & even. Nos. 2 & 4 are fair. Compression blows past pistons. Engine detonates & thuds on pick up.

Lubrication of cylinders.
Examination of cylinders shows that Nos. 1, 3, 5 & 6 cylinders are over-oiling. Nos. 2 & 4 are on dry side, but do not shew any signs of seizing.

Condition of cylinder walls.
Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 & 6 are in good condition. No. 5 still shews light marks down one side of walls.

Valves & fittings.
We have had on one occasion, at approximately 5250 miles, Nos. 2, 4 & 5 exhaust valves all clearance taken up between tappet & valve. These had apparently stretched during the run. Clearances were readjusted, and they have remained at this setting for the rest of run. All rocker arms are well lubricated.

Pistons.
Pistons E.53563. with shrunk gudgeon pins & end piece to E.5356/1/2. and to L.E.C. 2009. Bottom scraper ring made "L" shape.
Nos. 1, 3, 5 & 6 shew heavy carbon deposit, and heads covered with oil. Nos. 2 & 4 shew heavy carbon deposit, but are dry. On picking up on top gear, there are slight piston knocks. We have not heard, or noticed, any gudgeon pin knocks.

Periods.
We consider that the engine is very good for periods. There is a slight one at 10 to 12 m.p.h., and 18 to 23 m.p.h. On the retard we reported one from 44 to 41 m.p.h., but as this is a period of servo gears, we would not definitely say that it is coming from the engine, as this period of servo gears has increased slightly during the run, and was probably from that cause when we first reported it.
