To HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} -2- RL/G18/10/21. Contd. The Alemite grease syringe proved to be an enormous advantage in dealing with the spring shackles, and will enable the cars to be much better looked after in this respect, stopping the wear at such places as the front spring rear shackles. One difficulty was, however, experienced as regards to the rear shock dampers. No lubricating holes or arrangement could be found for the connecting link, neither at the top nor the bottom, and when an attempt was made to force the grease into the shock damper, it escaped by the split pin hole of the castellated nut in the spindle. *Suggest locking this with sheet-metal washer (tab washer) I am in favour of urging the prompt fitting of the Benton and Stone or other grease device with a portable syringe and flexible. I am sure this should be done without delay. Care should be taken that lubricators are fitted to every position in which it is desired grease should be used, and that every care should be taken that all the points have suitable lubricating holes and passages to enable the grease to go in efficiently. I say this because I found on 6 EX. one or two places where the grease would not enter. 6 EX. has had a water leak from the top pipe, which looks as though it is caused by a movement between the cylinders causing the solder to break away. Mr. Elliott is taking this up for a modification. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
