X4662 Mr. Minchin's A.T. clock worried him quite a lot. We found the trouble was that after having stopped by running down it did not restart when wound up again, and as it was fixed in the dash one could not swing it about. I believe that most lever escapements do restart, and such a feature should be a definite requirement for a car clock. I believe this was definitely included in the Watford clocks I got Mr. North to make; though these are good I am not entirely satisfied with them because they take so much winding, and the spring seems so stiff one fears it would break, and it puts so much strain on the gearing. Perhaps Watfords could modify it by fitting a larger and more flexible spring. The little presentation clock like a RR. radiator has been much admired, and seems nearly right, but my specimen does not go a full week, and requires winding every 5 days, but this may be due to the movement having never been oiled, or has been overoiled by bad oil: I will try to find out. I believe Mr. Minchin would like one of these if we felt generous enough to give him one. I think we ought to as he is a great help to Sales. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
