To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to BJ. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /7500 DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}3/M9.12.26. BONNET - PHANTOM. X.8260 X.8500 X.7500 Herewith we send N.sch.2319 shewing certain modifications to the bonnet to improve operation, and also an improved bonnet fastener. It will be seen that it is proposed to dispense with the present locating springs and clear away the bonnet stripping along the whole of the bottom edge, except immediately opposite the bonnet fasteners. The side of the bonnet is then stiffened so as to reduce as far as possible any vibration. With this arrangement it is expected that the difficulties experienced in shutting the present bonnet will be eliminated. On N.sch.2318 (also herewith) we have shewn geometrically the reasons for most of the present difficulty. We have not yet dealt with the question of the lock, but a scheme has been sufficiently worked out to make sure that there are no radical alterations required to the bonnet in order to incorporate it, and we shall send you a scheme in the course of a short while. It will be noticed that the success of the scheme depends to a large extent on the use of the cast dashboard. The bottom is the length of the standard Phantom, and we shall send you shortly a drg. shewing the slight modifications to the EAC.8. cast dashboard needed to adapt it to the present Phantom. If for other reasons it should be found impossible to use the cast dash, (which we hope will not be the case) it will be necessary to stiffen the present dashboard in order to get the advantage we are aiming at. R.{Sir Henry Royce} would like an advance model made of the fastener, for inspection. We think that EAC.7. bonnet should be made on these lines before the car goes to France.
