EXPERIMENTS ON CHARGING A STANDARD BATTERY
TO A CHARGING CHARACTERISTIC.

Reference of previous report on this subject
EFC5/T10.1.27, in which we described the results of charging
an up-to-date standard P & R battery to the characteristic -

V = 17 - .25 A

carried out practically by using a voltage maintained at 17.0
with a series resistance of .25 ohm.

It was considered of interest to try a further
test to another characteristic nearer to the condition of
constant voltage charging. The characteristic fixed upon was -

V = 16 - .15 A

carried out practically by using a voltage maintained at 16.0
with a series resistance of .15 ohm. Although on this charac-
teristic the finally sustained P.D. was only 15.5 (as against 16.1
in the previous case) and although the P.D. reached on constant
current charging at normal rate was 16.2 originally and now 15.9,
i.e. for 6 amperes, it was found in these tests (details of
which are contained in my assistant's report attached) that full
capacity can be obtained from the battery on discharge for three
discharges in succession, the actual capacities realised being -

After constant current (6 amperes) charge 84.5 ampere-hrs
" charging to characteristic (V=16 -.15A) 82.4 "
" second charge to " 83.2 "
" third " " " 84.0 "
" a further charge with a constant current
of 6 amperes. 84.0 "
