1044 To Ds. From Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell} c. Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Jnr.{Charles L. Jenner} c. By/NS.{Norman Scott} c. HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/RH.{R. Hollingworth} c. By/CS. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}4/MH.{M. Huckerby}12.5.39. B.60. We do not wish to proceed with the scheme PD.429 which is a "mock up" design to enclose the wraith type of slipper spring drive already adapted externally on the above units (nos. 2 and 4). The reason for this is that Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Jnr.{Charles L. Jenner} is preparing a finalised scheme whereby in addition to enclosing the slipper drive, includes a single belt drive for the auxilliaries as against the double belt at present used. This means some alteration to the crankcase pattern in regard to the water pump facing, the wheelcase and the sump together with the nose end of the crank. Regarding the new B.60 units Nos. 5 and 6 which we instructed some time ago, these should be held up in respect of the above affected parts. When this scheme is completed and the patterns altered, several castings should be taken off and one engine produced, No.5 unit. The pattern should then be altered to suit the hydraulic bottom tappet and assemble No.6 unit in accordance with the memos By/CS.1/EH.9.5.39 and By/CS.1/EH.5.5.39.
