Dear Mr Fowler Clarke,

Many thanks for your letter; I did not expect more than you have kindly done. I know vacancies do not occur so very often, & if the young man has a chance at some later date I am sure it will be as much as he hoped.

As regards the nearly closed circuit coil I put down what I thought at the time (in 1922) in patent no. 199,879, a copy of which you will be able to get. I don't think I should say the same today, but I do think there must be an advantage in it somewhere & that one is not merely out for a value of 1/2 LI^2 to be translated into 1/2 CV^2 independently of how L is produced, for I was able to get a greater utility for a given input than with an open circuit construction.
