To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X. 3317 E3/G5.1.20. X.3317.- RE "BUICK" EXHAUST VALVES. On a recent run we had the misfortune to burn the "Buick" exhaust valves so that they no longer fitted their seatings and caused the engine to be unfit for use. This is very liable to happen as the exhaust valves are carried in pockets which are separate pieces, not part of the water cooled cylinder. Mr. Cowen informs us that there is not a spare valve for "Buick" engines in the country. Mr. Royce would be very pleased if you would kindly make for us a set of six "Buick" exhaust valves in our own aero valve steel which, I believe, is Quickstep 7½% Chromium. I have therefore packed up and forwarded to you per passenger train, the burnt exhaust valves complete with pockets, springs, valve washers, and cotters. Owing to the lack of time I was unable to scrape and clean the carbon off these fittings, but hope that you can kindly have this done in Derby, together with the operation of grinding in the new valves on the pockets. Mr. Royce would like the new valve ot be .025" shorter in the stem so as to leave us a little more adjustment on the tappets rods. This will mean that the distance between the valve spring cotter hde and the end of the valve stem on which the rocker pushes will be .025" shorter, thus the conditions for the valve spring will remain unaltered.
