Re: Bentley 50 - Front Springs.

We send herewith PD.105 shewing some 6 1/2" initial deflection front springs for the first Bentley 50 car 1.B.50.

All of the suspension parts are the same as for B.III but the car has been raised in the fully loaded position .750" by increasing the bump by that amount, and reducing the rebound accordingly.

It will be noticed that the maximum corrected stress is 123,000 lbs. per sq. inch, and this is thought to be permissible, providing the wire is ground. In this connection By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} has promised to take up with the makers the possibility of having square wire at the ends of the spring, as we do not see how the wire can be ground unless these ends are forged after grinding, in which case there may be danger of decarburisation.

We have had to estimate the required spring load for this car, and we have presumed that it will be no greater than the lightest Close Coupled Wraith III - 25-G-VI. which, after due allowance has been made for the differences in the chassis, and the unsprung load, appears to indicate a 900 lb. spring.
