X3592 To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} R4/M7.12.22. X+3592. GOSHAWK - STARTER MOTOR X.3587. With reference to your Ey8/P4.12.22., I have pressed Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} to do his utmost to get the Bijur pinion to replace the Bendix. We should soon learn as to whether there is any need to alter the flywheel gear. I do not think that at present we need consider hardening the whole of the gear or making it in high allow steel. We might however consider making it in tyre steel similar to the material we used to use for brake drums and aero engine cylinders namely, from .4 to .6 carbon, with a fair percentage of Manganese heat treated, and left at the highest brinell that we can cut fairly easily.
