Dear Mr Hives,

I do not suppose you remember meeting me some years ago at Shoreham at Ricardo's Works. I am generally there in connection with work on behalf of my Company (the Shell Group). My reason for writing you this letter is to know if I came to Derby one day you could see me.

We are investigating the lubrication of Hypoid gears, and as you use this type of gear in your axle you may be able to give us some information on this subject.

We realise that in America they have a number of machines for testing lubricants which are stated to be suitable for Hypoid gears, but we feel that these machines do not altogether give a true picture of what is happening, and in view of this we have decided to investigate the problem ourselves using a Hypoid gear as fitted to automobiles.
