In reply to G.W.H./1.7.29 we have already fitted the same adaptors to five different cars, besides that sent out to Chateaurou x. In every case these have proved satisfactory when leather washers have also been fitted, but in one instance when the adaptor alone was fitted, leaks occured at high speeds over rough roads (20-EX). This adaptor was, of course, designed to accommodate the expansion of oil relative to the aluminium casing. The increase in volume of oil relative to the cubical expansion of aluminium is of the order of 10..1, and the depth of the adaptor is such that this condition is rendered harmless. Hence an increase in the depth of the adaptor seems unnecessary, and since the capacity of our container is already small, any tendency to reduce it should be avoided.

Both the Works and ourselves are satisfied the inclusion of the leather washer greatly condones to preventing oil leakage, except under expansion. This is proved by turning a pump upside down, with and without a leather washer. In the first instance it will quickly leak, in the latter 1/2 hour elapses before it is seen. It is therefore certain that the pumping effect of the plunger will be largely eliminated.

Our views on the reasons and cure for oil leaks down the dashboard are expressed in a memo to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} ref: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Gyl/LG. 28.6.29.

We have not found it necessary to drill the top flange of the filter, and do not advise it.
