X.1640 - ARMATURE WINDINGS.

(3) WAVE WINDING OF UNIFORM SLOT PITCH.

Number of conductors = n (virtual)
" " poles = p

Both n and p are even.
Winding is preferably retrogressive.
So in n - 2 conductors there must be p steps.
For uniform slot pitch, if conductor pitch
is z, for coil or back end connection, it must be
z - 2 for front or commutator end connection.
Thus the conductor steps are alternately z and
z-2, starting with z, and both are necessarily odd.
Number of conductors passed and traversed in
p steps
= n - 2 = p/2 (z + z-2)
= p (z - 1)
Hence n = p (z - 1) + 2
Number of slots
= n/2 = p(z - 1)/2 + 1
Since z - 1 is even,
number of slots = p m + 1
where m is an integer.
Thus for a four pole machine
number of slots = 4 m + 1.
