TESTS SERIES 3.

Cylinder block modified so that a copper tube could be inserted in injector housing thus enabling water to flow round copper tube and keep injector cool. The arrangement is shown in Fig. 9 from which it will be noted that this scheme differs from that used in C.I.1 only in the size and shape of the "windows" or short passages leading to the annulus around the copper tube. Other conditions standard.

Test No. Test Conditions & Results. Remarks.

3a. 3 hr. endurance run at normal load and jacket temp. at 2000 R.P.M. Power steady at 93.5 lbs/sq.in. B.M.E.P. and Sp.{Mr Spinney} Cons. .580 lbs/BHP/Hr. New Bosch nozzle.
Object to determine effect of better cooling of injector on power loss. Power very steady but needle valve much discoloured Fig.10.

3b. 2 hr. test using Persian gas oil as fuel. Power fell from 96 lbs/sq.in. BMEP during first hour to 38 lbs/sq.in. during second hour. Bosch nozzle used in Test 3a.
Initial power up to C.I.1. Fell off suddenly at end of 60 mins. Pump plunger found to be leaking. Object to investigate nature of oil on dis-colouration of needle and in power drop. Fig.11.

3c. New R.R. pump element. Persian gas oil. Fuel line pressure indicating valve at pump end. Bosch nozzle used in tests 3a and 3b. First hour power 90 lbs/sq.in. falling suddenly after 65 mins. to 82 lbs/sq.in. 2 hr. 20 mins. test.
Repeat of 3b. Indicat-or valve leaking probably caused power drop. Needle valve fairly badly discol-oured. Figs. 11 and 12.

3d. Persian gas oil. New R.R.-Bosch nozzle (ball race steel body and R.R.S steel needle). 2 hr. test. 90 lbs/sq.in. B.M.E.P. Sp.{Mr Spinney} cons. .500 lbs/BHP/Hr.
Power steady. Needle valve only slightly discoloured. Figs. 11 and 12.
