X.3763a. RE TYRES AND RIMS. X.3725.

During my recent hourneys into the Fen country and Norfolk, I had some experience with the new straight sided tyres. Those on chassis 1.EX were pumped before leaving here to 75 lbs. per square inch. The car ran very freely over the road, and the tyres held the road as the usual Palmer tyres, and therefore seem to make the car harsh on the road, and the axle jump on the road, if it was bumpy or pot-holey.

I had one puncture by a nail which let tyre down slowly (I had no experience with these tyres deflated). To remove this punctured tyre was a very great difficulty, owing to the outer cover fitting the rim very tightly. This led me to consider whether it is at all necessary to be a close fit on the rims. If it is not, the work of removing the tyre would indeed be very easy, and straight forward, and I would like Mr. Hives and Mr. Olley to go into this matter with the tyre- makers, because it would appear to me that the small amount of tightness that the tyre has on the rim after the split rim is removed, cannot be of much value to carry the load, whereas it is a considerable handicap to the handling of the tyre.
