x4583 To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 8/KW. 31.5.34. Bentley Head Lamp Vibration. We have had a number of unofficial complaints of the front wings flapping on the Bentley. Actually we know that this is partially a frame jellying complaint, but there is no doubt that it is emphasized by the torsional flexibility of the frame side channel at the point where the wing stay is attached. If you go up to any chassis and pull the lamp you will find that you can twist the wing stay over on the side member. We carried out a lot of tests and found that a dropped cross member between the two points of the frame where the lamp standards are fitted got rid of about 50% of the movement in certain cases. The lamps still move a good deal on their pillars but do not carry the wings with them. Actually on the new lamps coming through the wings, the pillars are not so bad. Will you please consider whether you can get a cross member under the front tray as an immediate expedient to reduce the trouble complained of.
