BEVEL GEARS.

I have seen a copy of Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}2/M29.10.26.

During the recent Motor Show and Paris Salon, I saw a good deal of a group of American Engineers which included the chief engineer to General Motors Ltd., and also the chief engineers of practically all the companies comprising that group, most of whom I had previously met in America.

Amongst other things we discussed Hypoid gears and I found that they had some considerable experience in this connection. Apparently two of the Companies had had some considerable experimental experience with them. One in which an offset of 2" had been tried, whilst running satisfactorily ahead, was found to cut in badly on the overrun and so far they had not succeeded in eliminating this fault. The other with an offset of 2" had so far not given the trouble of cut in on the overrun. I was unfortunately unable to obtain other dimensions of these bevels, so that the dimensions of the offset do not mean as much as they might have done, but will only serve to show that there is apparent difficulty in running with more than a certain amount of offset in any given case.

Otherwise they were agreed that the gear was quite easy to cut and easier to make quiet than a standard spiral bevel.

I hope this information will be of some use to you.
