Rolls Royce Limited, Derby. 5th., April, 1940. Dear Mr. Rowbotham, Bumpers. Following your visit of Wednesday last, I have been looking into the question of the bumper, and I am wondering whether you saw our drawing Pd/Exp.6178/C which was sent you with our letter of the 19th., ultimo. On this bumper we incorporated a badge and two overriders and the fixing of the overriders actually performed the function of attaching the spring to the bar. I appreciate that the over-rider is probably very much bigger than what you have in mind but it is the principle of attachment with which I am concerned, since the point you made on Wednesday was that you did not want any beetle bolts or protrusions on the front of the bumper other than the badge and the overriders. The scheme we put up seems to fulfil these conditions without the necessity of copper brazing a piece into the bumper bar itself. The only question is, whether the centres of the overriders are satisfactory to you. If this construction meets with your wishes, we should copper braze some attaching plate to the overrider and the attaching plate would carry a screwed insert passing through the bar and the spring. continued......
