- 4 - DETONATION. When using No.1 Shell fuel, no audible detonation is present throughout the speed range tested, i.e. 3500 to 6000 R.P.M. The exhaust was, of course, silenced during these tests. The silencer caused a considerable loss of power: the B.M.E.P. varying between 134.0 and 140.0 lbs/sq. in. throughout the speed range. VALVE TIMING. All the work done on this engine was carried out with the normal Rudge valve timing (.020 clearance) :- I.O. 28º E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} E.O. 50º E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} I.C. 48º L. E.C. 25º L. The valve lift diagrams for inlet and exhaust valves are given on sheet 1 of the curves. ----------------- MECHANICAL TROUBLES. PISTON SEIZURES. On two occasions we have been troubled with piston seizures: after 9 hrs. 10 mins. and 3 hrs. 35 mins. respectively. In the first case it is thought that the cylinder temperature became excessive. In the second case the seizure was apparently caused through insufficient clearance. On this occasion also the gudgeon pin became seized in the small end of the connecting rod and the gudgeon holes in the piston became excessively enlarged. | ||
