To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} 317 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}1/AP.19.11.37. P.III. CRANKSHAFT. Since using Hall's metal big ends we are now in the position that the life of the big ends is greater than that of the intermediate mains. We find that the Packard type crankshaft E.88364 can very easily be altered to give wider intermediate bearings. Balance weights are only fitted on webs 1, 6, 7, and 12. If we reduce the thickness of webs 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11 from .775" to .600" all on the side of the intermediate bearing and decrease the radii from .125" to .075" we shall have increased the effective bearing width of an intermediate bearing by .450" from 1.000 to 1.450". Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} has agreed that we can put through a crankshaft in .4 carbon steel heat treated to 400 Brinell. We should like its dimensions to be as above, and therefore ask you to start the machinery so that the necessary drawing can be made. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} | ||
