To R.{Sir Henry Royce} From Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wm. c.c. to SS.{S. Smith} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c.c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c.c. to PN.{Mr Northey} Ref/No.1/J.31.5.30. PHANTOM II PETROL RESERVE. Sales are not altogether satisfied with the reserve of petrol available on the Phantom II. Their difficulties are outlined in SS.{S. Smith}S/R27.5.30. We recommend that the simplest way of overcoming the difficulty is to put the two level filters back in the rear tank. Without any other modification this will put us back where we were with Phantom I, which was agreed by everybody to be satisfactory. The only alteration in procedure would be that the driver will have to put the the tap on the dashboard to reserve before he turns the tap on the petrol tank to the reserve position. The four pints of petrol in the Autovac tank will then be sufficient to fill the pipes between the tanks and the autovac and enable the car to use the two galls reserve in the tank without having to run on the starter motor for more than a few moments. We think that this scheme is much simpler than making any alteration to the autovac and has the advantage that it can be applied immediately with a minimum of alteration.
