LEC. 3960 Scheme to prevent valves from dropping into cylinder head. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 84407 Rocker shaft. Copper deposited. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 84413/4 Cast iron eccentrics. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 1360 Spacing springs. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 85552/3/4/5 Plunger casings with metering plugs to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1470. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 1471. Rocker bushes. LEC. 3886. Poppet valve plungers. Standard Valve spring E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 81530. The cylinder head was dismantled at 10,000 miles owing to the compressions of Nos. 1,3 and 5 cylinders being poor, slow running being affected. Before dismantling, the exhaust manifold was removed and the gas could be heard blowing past the exhaust valves on the compression stroke. The seatings of Nos. 1, 3 and 5 in the cylinder head had become distorted, the inserts had also contracted, a distinct space round the outer diameter being observable. They were not loose and no gas was leaking through the joint. The seatings had to be recut to obtain a satisfactory bedding. The valves had not distorted, the seating was true and no sign of burning. The inlet valve and cylinder seatings were in a good condition. No valve springs have broken. PISTONS. LOP. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 79533. LEC. 3878. E.85462. A light piston knock has developed during the latter mileage. Carbon deposit was normal. Oil consumption has not been great, the average for the mileage being 1,474 MPG. OIL FILTER FOR AUTOMATIC ADJUSTABLE TAPPETS. LOP. E.85737. LEC.3989. The filter was passing little oil after 10,000 miles, the gauze was choked with sludge. It would, from its appearance, be necessary to clean every 5,000 miles. PEDALS LOP. F.84384. H.Sch. 591. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}4138 TIE ROD FOR USE WITH FLEXIBLE ENGINE MOUNTING. With the flexible engine mounting, the anchorage of the pedals to the frame repeatedly came loose. The tie rod from the pedals to the engine was tried with different spring loadings and choc-a-bloc, with a view to lessening clutch jaggers and also stability of pedals. No benefit, however, was obtained. The tie rod has been discarded with the fitting of the standard front engine mounting, and since then no trouble with the anchorage has been experienced. | ||
