X.3485 - GOSHAWK IGNITION TESTS

Tests of the Goshawk ignition on some of the first 20 production chassis appeared at one time to indicate that the peculiar phenomenon of intermittent failure of the ignition, which has been experienced, might be due to faulty condenser connections, though from further work it is not now thought that this is the case.

We know from previous experience in the 40/50 case that these connections, having to accommodate high frequency surges, must be very sound and it is always preferable to have these in the form of a continuous metallic circuit rather than joints effected by spring pressures.

In case the desirability of modification should at some time arise, it is thought that it would not be undesirable at this stage to look into the possibility of improving these connections. The suggestions are as follows :-

(1) That the two connecting strips of one terminal of the condenser should each be independently soldered to the flap in connection with insulated terminal of the completed condenser, before the condenser is housed in the case.

(2) That as regards the earthed terminal of the condenser, the outside strip should be shorter in length and that two little holes could be drilled in the condenser case through one of which one condenser strip would appear when the condenser is put in its case.
