RE WATER PUMP SECTION 5169

POST RECEIVED 28 JAN 1928

I am surprised to find that we are in real trouble with water-pump lubrication on the Phantom. Squeaking sets up after about 5000 miles, and inspection shows that a gummy deposit of oxidised oil forms on the pin of the drip plug and absolutely prevents all passage of oil.

I am writing the Bijur Co. about this. Meanwhile we will immediately instruct a No. 3 drip plug instead of a No. 1 at this point. This will at least postpone the time at which blockage occurs.

Further we should notify depots that this is the cause of squeaking and that when it occurs they should :-
(a) Remove gland packings and soak in engine oil, or replace by new packings already soaked.
(b) Smooth-up the shaft with emery clotzh.
(c) Fit a No. 3 drip plug.

Also that on general principles this plug should be removed, tested and if necessary replaced about once a year.

Our original purpose in using a small drip plug here was to prevent putting too much oil in the water system but subsequent experience shows that even with a much larger plug the total amount of oil entering the water is negligible.

The No. 3 plug will pass about 2-2/3 times as much oil as the No.1., about .40 c.c. per min. at room temperature.
