To-from from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy E.P.C. X.4263 ORIGINAL. E2/G26/1/21. 8 RE "GOSHAWK II" STEERING AND FRONT SPRING SHACKLE - N. SCHEME 699. Referring to the above scheme, would you kindly note the following points of criticism raised by Mr. Royce, which we enumerate below:- (1) Alterations will be required to accommodate the deeper section of side channel. (2) The steering should be made to clear a link of 1 1/8" centres for the rear end of the front spring. We attach herewith a sketch of this link. (3) In conjunction with the design of frame sent, and the spring link specified, the spring should be given enough camber so that it will have 3 1/2" metal to metal bump. It is assumed that this bump will be measured from the tops of the "U" bolts securing the springs, to the axle, and that the "U" bolts will be fitted with a clamping plate over the top leaf of the spring. (4) Mr. Royce thinks that the side steering lever on the steering box may be perhaps increased to 10" and that it will be necessary to drop the side steering tube down-wards as it leaves the steering box lever. (5) The steering lever on the stub axle should be increased from 7" to 7 1/2" and the position of the steering ball in the plan view moved about 1/4" nearer the centre of the car, which latter can be accomplished, Mr. Royce thinks, by moving the steering box if necessary 1/4" nearer to the centre of the car, and the steering ball 1/2" nearer the steering box. (6) The wheels should be 820 x 120 m/m.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} (7) Mr. Royce wishes to see a scheme which supplies as much information as the one that has been made for the "Buzzard" namely, Lec.1227. (8) Referring now to the arrangement of front axle and front wheel hubs, these should be redrawn in accordance with Mr. Royce's wishes, with wire wheels, and with the spring pads of suitable height to suit the conditions specified in the foregoing for the front springs and the bump.
